“That’s a good suggestion especially we have Filipinos all over the world who can interpret anything... I think she thinks in Tagalog and answers in English. I can relate to that because I  used to think in English and answer in Tagalog, and it was very difficult for me,” ani Diaz.

“Kasi when you think about a Cebuana can hardly speak English and of course Tagalog. Maybe she should answer in Bisaya,” anang dating beauty queen.

That is phony!

Yes! Gloris Diaz’s intention was only to suggest to use and exercise a language where “one” (a contestant in particular) is comfy with! However, the news items and video footage say different: “Kasi when you think about a Cebuana can hardly speak English and of course Tagalog… Blah, blah, blah…”
Now then, it is “very, very” clear that Gloria Diaz cannot even express herself and her “major, major” personal dispositions in English! Why didn’t she say those in her own native tongue then so she wouldn’t be misinterpreted? If she is NOT that articulate in English, she shouldn’t have started launching her “major, major” suggestion(s) in English because she is not even comfortable with it! As evident to her phony analogies, she couldn’t even use proper phrasing in her own explanations!
That is phony!

Proud to be Cebuana-Pinay!!!!

I am working in a community agency here in Canada, serving newcomers, immigrants and refugees. Filipinos are one of those who have no issues with what they call "language barriers", meaning...we can speak English well! I have not encountered any Filipinos who needed interpreters while receiving our services yet. Other nationalities look up unto us for somehow we can converse in English and it does not have to be perfect.

Filipinos are too critical with pronunciations, grammar and fancy terminologies or jargons. Here in Canada, companies rather prefer you writing or speaking in simple straight English.

I think Ms. Raj did well and I think she understood the question clearly. I'd rather prefer her answer than a long pointless answer. All of us know that sometimes when under pressure, nerves can get into us! Her question was tough. It is one of the most dreaded questions in job interviews. The crown was not for her, so just let it go and move on!

As to Ms. Diaz, maybe she should be more careful of what she says. Information in this day of age travel as fast as light especially in Social Medias. Her "A Cebuana can hardly speak English" comment outraged a lot of Cebuanos/Cebuanas worlwide. Why not say "A Filipina"? so that it could be any Filipina, rather than specify from where or who. It again sparked another issues, deeper issues that Filipinos should be more concern. The issues of stereotyping and prejudice. Prejudiced comments should not become acceptable. It is itself a source of conflict, over the long term this will be a source of hatred.

Hence, mga kababayan stop worrying about things that we are already good at! Start doing something for the betterment of our country. Each of us has the responsibility to do what we can as individuals. Learn to avoid prejudiced statements and behaviors. Start now! As in now na!

Dili Na Maayo...

As a proud Cebuana, I really find it offensive when she made the comment in the news. To say that Cebuanos can hardly speak English is very unacceptable. It would be best if she thinks about what she will say first, before blurting it out, especially that she is a TV personality. I am not sure if I have taken what she has said out of context, but that is how I understood it. If she wants to make a point, then research it first. I on my part will own up that I do have a little bit of difficulty verbalizing Tagalog, but English?? I don’t think so.

Yes, I do agree with what she proposes, if a contestant prefers to have an interpreter, then do so. But after hearing everything, the Cebuano comment still sticks to my mind and all other points she has said has flown out of the window. I am very proud to be a Cebuano, and part of me does not want to comment on this topic, but try as I might I just cannot let this one down.

To Ms. Gloria Diaz

Knowing to speak another language is one thing, expressing yourself in that language is another.

~~~ Had you been given a choice, would you have chosen to be born Filipino?...
YOU ARE ABSOLUTELY CORRECT
dapat gawin MANDATORY ang interpreter para sa miss philippines kahit maruning mag-english yun contestant.
ang miss philippines ay representative ng ating bansa. dapat proud siya maging isang pinay. kasali dito ay ang pagsasalita ng ating sariling wika.
whether it is tagalog or cebuano or ilocano etc etc etc. isagaw nya dapat sa mundo! wag tayo mahiya.
pagkakataon na nga natin marinig ng buong mundo ang salita natin tapos pagpipilitan pa nila ang english.
mabuhay si venus raj!.
HARSH
I pity the Philippines... Thanks to Gloria Diaz, there's this mentality again to make it more and more divided... Setting "CEBUANAS" as an exmple for someone who needs an interpreter is so harsh.. Gloria Diaz kinda forgot that she too is a Filipina and should take ownership for the Country. First of all, where did she get the mentality that cebuanos don't know how to speak tagalog or better yet english? Why can't she own that she is a Filipina and not act like a racist for others who are not tagalogs... Cebuanos did in turn took the shame of the tagalogs during the hostage crisis. (as if we have a choice)... and I wonder why she was to represent the Philippines for the Universe when she can't make the Philippines look SEAMLESS.
Correction
Ms. Gloria Diaz, correction please, Ms. Venus Raj is Bicolana and not Cebuana. And where did you get that conclusion that Cebuanos can't speak English, as far as I know, most Cebuanos are more fluent in English than the rest of regions in the Philippines, and when we say Cebuanos, we're only talking here the people from Cebu and not all Visayan and Mindanao regions.
NOT ALL WINNERS WEAR A CROWN
To Venus,
It is my fervent prayer that you would not entertain the mockery from some of our kababayan over the so called “major major” within the context of your final Q & A.
A crown is just a crown no matter what it is made up of or symbolizes with. It is true that the winner merits the crown but the same is true when I say NOT ALL WINNERS WEAR A CROWN.
Your life’s journey, the way I consider it is a fairy tale… full of struggles but ended with “and she lives happily ever after” finale. This time not filled with magic spell but nurtured with goodness, hard work, persistence, and determination.
Continue to live up and keep up the true essence of being a Filipina within you. Be proud of your mother who never traded you for money.
You may come home without the tangible Miss Universe crown, but hey, the Venus Raj we have just known is incomparable to that crown.
Take care now and my whole family will see you again via TFC.
To elfilibusterism and misalas, very valuable thoughts… sana mahimasmasan ang mga nagmamagaling nating mga kababayan who probably came with their answers overnight. Peace po!
