Pinoys mark start of Lent with Ash Wednesday
Filipino Catholics today begin the Lenten season or the commemoration of the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ.
To commemorate the passion and death of Christ, all faithfuls are encouraged to practice fasting and abandon luxuries during the 40-day commemoration.
Catholics aged 14 and above are required to abstain from eating meat during Fridays.
On the other hand, fasting, or the reduction of the amount of food normally eaten, should be done by Catholics aged 18 to 59.
In an Ash Wednesday mass, ash in the form of a cross is imposed on the forehead of the faithful. The ash signifies repentance.
