10 meters of Tubbataha Reef damaged by US ship
MANILA, Philippines -- The Tubbataha Management Office is questioning why a US navy ship was sailing in a no-navigation zone in the Sulu Sea.
Protected Areas Supt. Angelique Songco said the reef is a national park and the US navy did not report their presence in the area.
The Palawan Council for Sustainable Development said the US vessel must be held accountable to the damage to the coral reef.
Initial investigation showed that ten meters of the reef, equivalent to three levels of a building, was damaged after the USS Guardian ran aground and got stuck in the reef on Thursday.
The government will seek damage from the US depending on the extent of the damage to the reef.
