Esguerra: Corona defense has nowhere to go
MANILA, Philippines - Former justice undersecretary Ramon Esguerra said the defense team of Chief Justice Renato Corona had no recourse but to go to the media after receiving information that Malacañang, through Executive Secretary Jojo Ochoa, was offering P100 million each to the senator-judges to vote to reject a Supreme Court TRO on the opening of Corona's dollar accounts.
In his interview, Esguerra said the defense team could not release the information in Corona's impeachment trial because it would be out of order.
He also said he does not know if any of the senator-judges accepted the P100 million bribe.
He added that there was nothing wrong with calling for a press conference, noting that it was the first time that they called for one.
Asked about the possibility of being cited in contempt and jailed for their revelations, he said: "OK lang yun sa amin, kalkulado na namin yan."
