MANILA - Resigned senator Juan Miguel Zubiri on Thursday addressed rumors that he is gay before he finally married commercial model and VJ Audrey Tan.
"Actually, I'm a lesbian. I love women," he said in an interview with ANC's Headstart.
Zubiri, who won the world championship for arnis light heavyweight division in 1989, admitted that he is a "love-kiss kind of guy" who is unafraid to show emotion.
"Sometimes with my friends, we can get, you know, BFF. It doesn't bother me. You are not sikat if they don't consider you gay in showbiz and politics," he added.
During the show, he shed tears when shown a clip of him reading a poem to Tan before he proposed.
"She's the love of my life. I am happily married with two beautiful kids and I thank my wife for that. She's a wonderful wife and mother. She writes a column in the Inquirer and she is a wonderful supporter of my campaign," he said.
He said resigning from the Senate would have been more difficult if his wife was not there.
"Without her, I would have gone crazy," he said.
Zubiri said he remains friends with his ex-girlfriends including singer-actress Vina Morales. He described Morales as a "passionate person."
Migz says Koko 'intelligent but angry'
On the other hand, Zubiri described Sen. Koko Pimentel as "intelligent but angry."
Zubiri criticized Pimentel for his "malicious thoughts", saying he got upset with Pimentel last year when the senator wanted him to leave the United Nationalist Alliance senatorial slate.
"I was upset at one point in time. Remember when I joined UNA and he said 'Leave UNA' and he came out with a big prescon. That was the day of my mother and father's 50th wedding anniversary and it destroyed the whole mood of our anniversary. You know, 50 years anniversary only happens once in a lifetime. That was when I got upset but now it is all behind me because this is not a one-on-one fight," he said.
Zubiri said he practiced "ice cream diplomacy" when he was Senate majority floor leader. He said he gave senators Haagen Dasz ice cream to lessen tension.
