Corona closed 3rd account on day he was impeached
MANILA, Philippines - PSBank president Pascual Garcia bares Chief Justice Renato Corona closed down a 3rd peso account with initial deposit of P17 million last December 12, 2011, the same day that Corona was impeached by the House of Representatives.
Garcia said Corona's time deposit with account number 089-121023848 was opened on June 29, 2011 and was closed down December 12, 2011.
Before his testimony, PSBank Katipunan branch manager Annabelle Tiongson also testified that Corona closed down 2 other accounts on the same date. The two accounts had a total balance of P19.7 million as of end-December 2010.
Garcia said he does not know if Corona's accounts were pre-terminated. He said accounts can be closed "over the phone, in person or in writing."
Asked if he personally was instructed by Corona to close the accounts, he said: "I have never talked to the Chief Justice."
Sen. Jinggoy Estrada said he finds suspicious that Corona closed his 3 accounts on the day he was impeached.
"It is quite suspicious that these 3 accounts were all closed on the day that the Chief Justice was impeached," he said.
