DSWD eyes "child-labor-free" Philippines
The government claims to be doing its job to prevent child labor in the country.
Social Welfare and Development Secretary Dinky Soliman said poverty is the main cause of child labor in the Philippines.
"In families where children are able to contribute already to family income, you get your children to work. Unfortunately, many poor families get their children engaged in hazardous work," she told ANC.
Soliman said the government's conditional cash transfer program is one way to ensure that children go to school instead of doing manual labor.
She gave the assurance after the International Labor Organization reported that 2.4 million Filipino children are part of the current workforce across the country.
