MANILA - Activist priest Fr. Robert Reyes on Friday said he believes that his nephew, Ernest Lucas Jr., was murdered by Jack Enrile, the senatorial candidate and son of Senate President Juan Ponce Enrile.
Reyes is the uncle of Lucas, who was killed in San Lorenzo Village, Makati in 1975. The victim was the son of retired Navy Capt. Ernesto Lucas, Reyes' first cousin.
Speaking to radio DZMM, Reyes said two of Lucas' friends witnessed Enrile kill the Navy captain's son. However, the two changed their story after Enrile's bodyguard, Danny Cruz, claimed that he shot Lucas.
Enrile has denied the accusations, saying that it was his bodyguard who killed Lucas.
Reyes noted it was not the first time that Enrile was linked to a shooting incident. He said the young Enrile was always absolved of any wrongdoing and his bodyguards blamed for the shootings.
He said that except for Lucas Sr., the entire Lucas family left for the United States just months after the death of Lucas Jr. probably out of fear of the older Enrile who was defense secretary of President Marcos.
