MANILA, Philippines - Comelec spokesman James Jimenez says the poll body is exercising prudence and flexibility in recognizing party list groups.
Speaking to ANC, Jimenez’s statement comes amid the applications of party-list groups with acronyms like “Ako Ba”, “Ako Pa” and “Ala Eh.”
A group of former drug addicts and alcoholics has also filed a petition for party-list accreditation.
Jimenez says the Comelec will go beyond the names and acronyms and thoroughly check if the groups indeed represent marginalized sectors.
“So again at first glance, it might not seem fit into that category or at first glance, it might seem too funny to be true but as far as the Comelec is concerned, we have to hear what they have to say,” he said.
“We hope that at the end of these hearings, we can go beyond the funny names and see if they really have any meat in their representation. If they do, then I suppose the name should not be any hindrance to them,” he added. ANC Dateline Philippines, May 3, 2012
