MANILA, Philippines – A spokesman of Chief Justice Renato Corona’s defense team on Thursday said he does not believe that the chief magistrate is being less than truthful to his own lawyers on the matter of his wealth.
“Kung kami ay di naniniwala, bakit pa kami nandiyan? Ang ibig bang sabihin niyan ay kami rin ay nililinlang niya? Hindi naman siguro. Hindi naman ganun. Naniniwala kami na siya ay may pinanghahawakan at within the next 4 days, malinawan namin ito at maiharap sa Senado. Nakahanda kami,” defense spokesman Ramon Esguerra told radio dzMM.
Esguerra said the Corona defense team is working day and night with the Chief Justice in dissecting the 17-page Anti-Money Laundering Council report, which allegedly showed that Corona has 82 bank accounts.
He said the team is still waiting for documents of possible transactions made by Coronas as far back as 2003.
The defense lawyer said the AMLC report is actually a summary of reports on Corona’s more than 400 bank transactions over the years.
He also said the defense will no longer call bank managers to testify but added that nothing will stop senators from calling them to the stand.
Esguerra said Corona’s testimony will center on just 3 questions:
a) How many are the accounts?
b) Who owns it?
c) Why isn't it in your SALN?
He added that he expects the defense to finish its presentation by Thursday next week.
