MANILA, Philippines - Cebu Gov. Gwen Garcia on Thursday said she is joining the Partido Demokratiko Pilipino-Lakas ng Bayan (PDP-Laban) party of Vice-President Jejomar Binay because she believes it can offer a strong senatorial lineup in the 2013 polls.
“I had an invitation to join PDP-Laban from the Vice-President and since I do believe that this is the party together with the United Nationalist Alliance would be able to present a strong lineup and that factored into my decision,” she told ANC. Garcia is a former member of the National Unity Party.
The governor said she is seriously considering running for senator next year because she believes that she can get a much better representation of Cebu, the Visayas and even Mindanao.
“I also believe that what I have been able to learn in all these years as governor on local governance would be a big factor that could help me craft national policy on the national level should I be given the chance to serve as senator,” she said.
She said she has yet to talk to Binay or former president Joseph Estrada about possibly joining the UNA senatorial lineup.
She also said she has not told former president Gloria Macapagal Arroyo about her move but said the former president may be aware of her decision since she has already informed the National Unity Party. Garcia is a former ally of Mrs. Arroyo.
