Angara: CJ is guilty
MANILA, Philippines - Sen. Juan Edgardo Angara on Tuesday voted to convict Chief Justice Renato Corona in Article 2 of the impeachment complaint against the chief magistrate.
"I find the respondent guilty," he said.
He is the first to vote on Article 2 of the impeachment complaint, which accused Corona of culpable violation of the Constitution and betrayal of public trust for failure to disclose his statement of assets, liabilities and net worth.
Prosecutors need 16 of the 23 senator-judges to vote for conviction to remove Corona. The defense needs 8 votes to acquit Corona.
In his explanation, Angara said the Constitution obliges all public officials a complete disclosure of his assets, liabilities and net worth.
He said both the prosecution and defense presented evidence that showed Corona did not declare all his assets in his SALNs. He said Corona corroborated this with his own statement.
"I may grant CJ honest mistake of judgment, but given his wide public experience this willful omission and taking into consideration the large amount of money amounts to culpable violation," he said.
