MANILA, Philippines - Interior and Local Government Secretary Jesse Robredo on Wednesday said he wants the Department of Justice and the Bureau of Immigration to ban Jordanian journalist Baker Abdulla Atyani from returning to the country once he surfaces.

Robredo said Atyani endangered himself and his 2 Filipino crew members after failing to disclose that he would be interviewing Abu Sayyaf terrorists in Mindanao.

The DILG chief said authorities have already contacted Atyani, who informed them that they are safe.

"Based on the information we have gotten, they are safe, they are not threatened and not under duress," he said.

Robredo said the Jordanian journalist is taking responsibility for his Filipino news crew.

The DILG chief said the government is taking a wait-and-see approach and have urged Atyani to come out. He said the government wants to make sure that in the end, they are indeed safe.
