MANILA, Philippines - What will President Aquino talk about in his third State of the Nation Address?
According to Budget Secretary Butch Abad, the SONA is still a work in progress but noted that there are many accomplishments that the President can include in his annual address.
These include the unrelenting anti-corruption campaign, which led to the conviction of Chief Justice Renato Corona; the 6.4% growth in GDP in the first quarter and positive developments in investments.
Abad, meanwhile, said the government is planning to fill the need for classrooms and teachers by the end of 2013. He said he is proposing that government hire 61,000 teachers next year and build 27,000 more classrooms.
He said the government also plans to spend P44 billion in cash subsidies for 3.8 million indigent households next year.
He said the Bureau of Internal Revenue is set to hit P1 trillion in collections this year, which will be used to grow the economy.
"We are not yet counting, of course, the proceeds that will come from the passage of the indexation of sin taxes as well as the rationalization of fiscal incentives which we hope to generate P40 billion-P50 billion more," he said.
He said the government also expects savings by tightening the budget and removing unnecessary expenditures and leakages.
