PH, Canada strengthen defense, military cooperation
MANILA, Philippines -- President Benigno "Noynoy" Aquino III and Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper signed a deal that will help the Philippines buy military equipment from Canada.
It's the first time in 15 years that a Canadian prime minister visited the Philippines.
Harper said that Canada and the Philippines have increasing "people-to-people links" with more than 800,000 Filipinos living in Canada.
Calling the Philippines an emerging "Asian tiger," Harper talked about increasing investments here.
During Harper's visit, the Canadian Commercial Cooperation and the Philippine Defense Department signed a memorandum of understanding on government to government transactions on military and defense.
Aquino hopes this will boost the Philippines' capability to defend its territory. -- With a report from ANC World Tonight
