MANILA, Philippines - The Philippine National Police and the Commission on Elections on Monday gave assurance that there will be no repeat of the 2009 Maguindanao massacre, considered the worst election-related incident in the country.
The PNP said it is monitoring 15 areas of concern during the elections, as well as some 50 private armed groups.
The PNP said it will implement a nationwide gun ban on January 13, 2013, which is the first day of the election period. PNP chief Nicanor Bartolome said all permits to carry firearms will be suspended and anyone who needs to carry a firearm during the period must submit their papers for exemption at the Comelec.
