DOH records 'significant' decrease in firecracker injuries
MANILA, Philippines -- The health department says at least 413 New Year-related injuries have been recorded so far, down 17 percent from 2011.
Of the total, 404 are from firecrackers, eight are injuries from stray bullets and one from firecracker ingestion.
Health Secretary Enrique Ona called for stricter implementation of the law on the sale of firecrackers, noting that 54 percent of the injuries were due to prohibited firecrackers.
But Ona believes the public is now learning to avoid using firecrackers.
