MANILA -- Traffic almost ground to a halt along Roxas Boulevard in Manila Thursday as truckers held a protest caravan.
Around 50 trailer trucks pulled over in front of the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) office, demanding exemption from the current ban on overloaded trucks.
The group, composed mostly of truckers carrying imported products, said it wants the same exemption given to rice truckers.
DPWH Secretary Rogelio Singson, for his part, has ordered the suspension of the ban which allows authorities to apprehend 18-wheeler and 22-wheeler trucks that violate the maximum allowable gross vehicle weight.
But Singson reiterated trucks that exceed the 13,500 kilogram per axle capacity are still not allowed on national roads.
