MANILA, Philippines - Metro Manila police chief Leonardo Espina on Tuesday said he is investigating reports that Taguig police chief Senior Superintendent Tomas Apolinario Jr. and several of his men are involved in the illegal drug trade.
Espina said he has talked to PO3 Alexander Saez who earlier told reporters that Apolinario and other police officers were recycling seized narcotics and selling it in Taguig.
"We met yesterday and I also called for the chief of the Southern Police District to investigate the claim of Saez," he told radio dzMM.
He said he has yet to talk to Apolinario about the allegations.
A Philippine Daily Inquirer report quoted Saez as saying that Taguig police officers would arrest drug pushers outside their area of jurisdiction and then sell the confiscated drugs to pushers in Taguig.
Espina said the police investigation will also consider an extortion case against Saez.
