Canadian shooter killed self - police
CEBU - Canadian national John Pope shot himself in the head after he was caught by responding policemen after his shooting spree in the Cebu City justice hall, the OIC of the Cebu City Police Office said Tuesday.
Senior Superintendent Mariano Natu-el Jr., Cebu City Police Office OIC, said Pope first shot victims Rene Rafols and lawyer Jovian Atias inside the sala of the Municipal Trial Court in Cities (MTCC) Branch 6 for the hearing on his case. The 2 died instantly.
It was learned Rafols had filed 4 counts of malicious mischief against Pope.
The Canadian then shot Assistant City Prosecutor Maria Teresa Casiño who was in the hallway.
Pope then went to the first floor to look for 2 other fiscals who were handling his other criminal cases but failed to find them.
Two responding police officers, PO2 Celso Rvera Jr. and PO1 Oriel Hagupit, then shot Pope, hitting him on the arm and leg.
Natu-el Jr. said Pope shot himself in the head.
"Natumba yung suspek at siya ay nagpakamatay, Binaril niya rin yung sarili niya," he said.
The whole incident took about 10 minutes, Natu-el said.
The police official said they are still investigating how Pope was able to bring his firearm inside the justice hall.
He said Pope had most likely studied ways on how to bring his gun inside the building without being detected. He confirmed that guards did not have metal detectors and only frisked visitors.
