MANILA, Philippines - Sen. Panfilo Lacson believes the police operation that left 13 people killed in Atimonan, Quezon on January 6 was legitimate.
Lacson said while the actions taken by officers manning the checkpoint seem excessive and lapses in the actual checkpoint are obvious, it is very unlikely that military personnel present would have been part of anything illegal.
"I don't believe it was a rubout. The mere fact na magco-coordinate sila sa Army personnel madi-disabuse mind ko na rubout. Kung may plano silang mag-ambush bakit magco-cOordinate sa di nila kilala. Di maco-control gagawin ng Army component sa operation," he said.
Still, Lacson said Superintendent Hansel Marantan has a lot to explain.
He said the justice department seems set on taking the case to court even before the end of preliminary investigations.
