MANILA, Philippines -- Environmental activist and radio broadcaster Gerry Ortega was working on an exposé on the misuse of the Malampaya funds before he was killed, the chairman of the National Union of Journalists of the Philippines - Palawan said Thursday.
During the Senate Blue Ribbon Committee hearing, Redempto Anda, a correspondent of the Philippine Daily Inquirer, said Ortega had been receiving death threats in the course of his research.
"At certain points we were discussing security implications of what we were doing. During those times, he had to go around with a body guard because he had been receiving death threats specifically when we were deeper in the issue, daily criticizing the local government headed by Joel Reyes," he said.
"I firmly believe that this has no other reason than the exposé on the Malampaya issue," he added.
Anda added many journalists have decided not to cover the story due to security threats.
