More than 200 families have been affected by clashes between government forces and the New People's Army (NPA) in Malungon, Sarangani Province.
The firefight began Friday last week.
Some 229 families or nearly 700 individuals fled barangays J.P. Laurel, Banate, Kinabalan and Kawayan for fear of getting caught in the crossfire.
Residents said the firefight was triggered by the presence of more than 20 armed men in the area.
The military has identified the armed men as members of the NPA’s Front Committee 71.
The Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) is still confirming if a communist rebel was killed in the clashes. – ANC Dateline Philippines, June 4 2012
