Calungsod thanksgiving mass to draw over 1-M devotees
MANILA, Philippines - Organizers expect the national thanksgiving mass for St. Pedro Calungsod to draw over 1 million devotees.
The national thanksgiving mass will be at 5 p.m. but devotees flocked to the 28-hectare South Road Properties as early as 6 a.m. to join the celebration for Calungsod, who was recently declared a saint by the Vatican.
At least 1,500 security personnel are set to be deployed around the shrine.
Thousands of devotees from the northern and southern parts of Cebu are also expected to converge in SRP after a procession.
President Benigno Aquino III, Vice President Jejomar Binay and members of the Catholic hierarchy are expected to attend the thanksgiving mass for Calungsod in the afternoon.
"Pedrito" dolls and other images of the second Filipino saint are also selling well among the devotees.
