Pangasinan mayor, Bukidnon councilor shot dead
MANILA, Philippines - The mayor of Infanta, Pangasinan and a councilor in Bukidnon were killed in separate shooting incidents over the weekend.
Mayor Ruperto Martinez was shot in his house at around 2:30 p.m. by motorcycle-riding gunmen.
Martinez was rushed to a hospital in Zambales where doctors failed to save him.
Authorities have yet to identify the suspects and the motive behind the killing.
Hours before the shooting, ABS-CBN News was able to interview Martinez regarding protests against the planned building of a nickel mining site.
In Bukidnon, meanwhile, Manolo Fortich Councilor Diosdado Ditona was shot dead Sunday while he was driving his car.
Politics and land feud are being eyed as possible motives for the shooting.
