MANILA, Philippines -- The Sandiganbayan has sentenced former Rodriguez, Rizal Mayor Pedro Cuerpo to six months in prison for refusing to comply with a court order to accommodate applications for building permits of a group of informal settlers.
In a 23-page decision penned by Associate Justice Teresita Diaz-Baldos, the anti-graft court found Cuerpo and municipal engineer Fernando Roño guilty of violating Article 231 of the Revised Penal Code.
The Sandiganbayan said Cuerpo and Roño openly defied the San Mateo Regional Trial Court's order to process the applications of members of the Samahang Magkakapitbisig.
The case stemmed from a complaint filed by a certain Leticia Nanay and other land owners in connection with the issuance of building permits on September 17, 2003.
The two were also slapped with temporary special disqualification of 10 years, 8 months and a day from public office, and a fine of P1,000. -- Report from Johnson Manabat, dzMM; With ANC
