MANILA, Philippines – Residents of Cateel in Davao Oriental are getting something more than relief packs to celebrate Christmas after the Noche Buena packs promised by the government arrived in the town.

They included noodles, fruit cocktail, cupcakes, macaroni salad, sandwich spreads and milk, all wrapped in the traditional malong – a piece of cloth used either as clothing or blanket.

At the town plaza, the youth were tapped to sweep the area, also as part of preparations for Christmas. Residents were paid to do the clean-up.

Social Welfare Secretary Dinky Soliman said they are also planning to distribute more than 174,000 Noche Buena packs to typhoon survivors in Compostela Valley and other areas in Davao Oriental and Davao del Norte.

According to Suliman, officials in the Caraga region will also distribute Noche Buena packs in Surigao and Agusan provinces, while non-government groups continue to provide relief supplies to the survivors.

In an interview with ANC Monday, Soluman said they will have to add more Noche Buena packs as the number of victims increase every day. -- Report from ANC.
