Suarez a win away from Olympic slot
MANILA, Philippines – Filipino boxer Charly Suarez is just a win away from qualifying for the 2012 Olympics in London.
The Davao City native defeated Japan’s Daisuke Narimatsu, 24-11, in the semi-finals of the lightweight division of the Asian Olympic qualifying event in Kazakhstan.
Suarez, a two-time Southeast Asian Games gold medalist, needs to defeat China’s Liu Qiang in the gold medal match to earn a spot in the Summer Games this July.
If Suarez wins in the final, he will be the second Filipino boxer to earn an Olympic berth after 17-year-old Mark Anthony Barriga, who also earned a spot last year. Dateline Philippines, ANC, April 12, 2012.
