Federer, Djokovic advance to French Open quarters
MANILA, Philippines – Roger Federer surrendered one set against fan and newcomer David Goffin before beating the Belgian to reach the quarterfinals of the French Open.
Federer, seeking a record 17th Grand Slam title, will play either Argentine Juan Martin del Potro, the ninth seed, or No. 7 Tomas Berdych of the Czech Republic in the last eight.
Meanwhile, world No. 1 Novak Djokovic completed a remarkable escape act to move into the quarterfinals as he hauled himself from two sets down to beat unfancied Italian Andreas Seppi.
Djokovic got the upperhand in the third set and began to wear down his opponent before closing out the match in four hours and 18 minutes.
The win extended Djokovic’s Grand Slam winning streak to 25 matches and put him into the quarterfinals of his 12th straight Grand Slam event.
In the women’s division, world No. 1 Victoria Azarenka crashed out of the French Open, losing to 15th seed Dominika Cibulkova in the fourth round.
Azarenka will lose her world No. 1 spot to Maria Sharapova, if the Russian second seed makes it to the final. Mornings @ ANC, June 4, 2012.
