MANILA, Philippines – Rich Franklin managed to hold on and survive a scare as he defeated hometown favorite Wanderlei Silva via unanimous decision in the main event of UFC 147.
After 16 months in hiatus, Franklin shook off the ring rust with his stiff right jab and constant footwork.
But Silva nearly ended the fight towards the end of the second round, when he caught Franklin with a series of big punches, including a right hook to the chin that dropped Franklin to the canvas.
After five rounds of back-and-forth action, Franklin was declared the winner.
Silva, who was fighting in his hometown Brazil for the first time since August 2000, failed to avenge his loss to Franklin at UFC 99 in June 2009.
Franklin admitted afterward that he could not fully remember what happened after Silva’s second-round blitzkrieg. -- Mornings @ ANC, June 25, 2012.
