MANILA, Philippines – Filipino athletes bound for the 2012 Olympic Games in London received a ceremonial send-off before departing for the world’s biggest sports meet.
Eleven Filipinos have qualified for the London Games, and seven Olympians are all set to leave Manila for the United Kingdom this Sunday.
Weightlifter Hidilyn Diaz, long-jumper Marestella Torrs, steeplechaser Rene Herrera, swimmers Jasmine Alkhaldi and Jessie Lacuna, shooter Brian Rosario and boxer Mark Anthony Barriga promised to meet the high level of play required at the Olympics.
Meanwhile, Filipino athletes who are based overseas will go straight to London: judoka Tomohiko Hoshina, who will come from Japan; and cyclist Daniel Caluag, who will come from the United States.
Filipino archers Mark Javier and Rachel Cabral will also carry the Philippine colors after qualifying in the just-concluded World Archery Championships in Ogden, Utah.
The current crop of national team players expressed high hopes for their respective performances, and promised to do their best to bring home the elusive Olympic gold for the Philippines. -- Mornings @ ANC, June 26, 2012.
