Inspirational Pinoys run Olympic torch relay in UK
MANILA, Philippines – The 2012 London Olympics is just around the corner and since May, the Olympic torch has been making its way towards London through an official relay across the United Kingdom.
Among the lucky torchbearers are two Filipinos from Manila.
Joven Mallo and Marcy Reyes, who work at the Intercontinental Group in Manila, were among the lucky 8,000 chosen to carry the Olympic torch.
Both Filipinos impressed the selection panel from the London Organizing Committee of the Olympic Games for their contributions to their local community in the Philippines.
Mallo was chosen for his heroic act during Typhoon Ondony in September 2009, when he saved the life of an elderly neighbor as floods hit parts of Quezon City.
Reyes, meanwhile, was honored for her extensive charity work, including running marathons for environmental causes, building houses for Habitat for Humanity and feeding street children in Pasig.
After Mallo and Reyes, three other Filipinos will carry the torch: British-Filipino entrepreneur Stephen Cheung, UK-based caregiver Apol Enteria and UK-based cancer survivor Rodolfo Carlos.
The Olympic torch will slowly make its way to Stratfod in East London, at the opening ceremony of the London Games on July 27. -- Mornings @ ANC, June 26, 2012.
