MANILA, Philippines – Cesc Fabregas struck the winning spot kick as Spain beat Portugal, 4-2, on penalties, to advance to the Euro 2012 finals.
Spain is the reigning world and European champions, a team with incredible depth. Portugal, meanwhile, boasted of having one of the best footballers on the planet in Cristiano Ronaldo.
The semi-final ended goalless after extra time.
At a packed viewing arena in Madrid, thousands of fans held their breath as Fabregas stepped up to score the vital spot kick, and celebrations started as the Barcelona striker’s shot went in off the post.
Spain will face either Germany or Italy in Sunday’s final.
But in Lisbon, the atmosphere was funereal, as fans watched the Spanish winning penalty and promptly streamed out of the exits in bitter disappointement. Mornings @ ANC, June 28, 2012.
