MANILA, Philippines – Petra Kvitova’s hopes of defending her Wimbledon title were shot to pieces as Serena Williams ousted the defending champion in their quarter-final match-up.

Both players tore into each other with serves and ferocious groundstrokers, but it was the greater power of four-time winner Serena that won out.

With the win, Serena set-up a semi-final against Belarus’ Victoria Azarenka.

Azarenka advanced by defeating Tamira Paszek in straight sets, staying on course to become world No. 1.

The second-seeded Belarussian eased through the first set in 46 minutes and finally clinched victory on her second match point after one hour and 49 minutes.

Meanwhile, Sabine Lisicki was knocked out of the tournament by compatriot Angelique Kerber.

Lisicki, a semi-finalist last year and this year’s 15th seed, beat top-seed Maria Sharapova in the fourth round but failed to overcome Kerber.

Kerber won four games in a row to clinch victory in two and a half hours.

She will next play either Agnieszka Radwanska of Poland or Maria Kirilenko of Russia for a place in the final. Mornings @ ANC, July 4, 2012.
