MANILA, Philippines – The Ateneo de Manila Blue Eagles began their UAAP title defense in style as they routed the Adamson Falcons, 73-57, last Sunday at the SM Mall of Asia Arena.
Greg Slaughter scored 17 points to lead a balanced all-around attack for the Eagles, who also got strong contributions from Nico Salva and a slew of bench players.
It was sweet revenge for the four-time defending champions, as the Falcons foiled their drive to sweep the elimination round in Season 75.
Meanwhile, the De La Salle Green Archers also won their opening game against the University of the Philippines Fighting Maroons, 73-68, thanks in part to the heroics of blue-chip recruit Jeron Teng.
A jumper by Alvin Padilla put the Maroons ahead, 68-67, but Teng converted a difficult go-ahead lay-up and was fouled.
The rookie coolly completed the three-point play, and that proved to be the pivotal basket as the Archers’ defense would hold up for the final 27 seconds of the contest. -- Mornings @ ANC, July 16, 2012.
