MANILA, Philippines – Boxing champ Manny Pacquiao was gracious in defeat after suffering a heartbreaking knockout loss to Mexican fighter Juan Manuel Marquez.
Speaking to ABS-CBN’s Umagang Kay Ganda, Pacquiao said his first words to cutman Buboy Fernandez after he was revived were: “Tapos na? Tapos na ang laban?”
Pacquiao admitted he walked right into Marquez’s right hand, which put him down for good.
“Yung pangalawa na-outbalance napasugod ako. Tapos tamang-tama, nasalubong ko yung straight niya,” he said.
Nevertheless, the People’s Champ remained upbeat, saying that he felt strong and fast during the fight. He said he had already bloodied Marquez’s nose and was looking to finish the fight in 1-2 rounds.
Asked about his thoughts on losing, he said: “Pwede ka bang pumasok sa larangan ng paligsahan ng walang natatalo? Dumarating yung panahon na matalo ko,.dumarating yung panahon na mananalo ka. Kailangan pag dumating yung panahon na talo ka, dapat buong puso mo ring tanggapin dahil pinasok mo yung trabaho na yan.”
He also shared that his faith remained strong despite the loss:
“Wala namang problema sa akin. Ok naman ako. Nasa kamay ako ng God. It’s only material things. In heaven, walang popular-popular duon. Pantay pantay tayong lahat. Importante yung relationship mo, yung faith mo. Yung relationship mo sa Panginoon nandiyan, mas lalo pang tumindi, kasi karamihan sa tao yung faith nila in good times lang. Pag bad times, katulad ng mga nangyari katulad ko, yung faith nila nababawasan, nawawala.”
Pacquiao’s wife, Jinkee, also shared Manny’s sentiments.
“The great victory is the life that we have in Christ. Yung fame and fortune will come and go. Keep the faith and trust in God for everything, He has great plans. Kailangan i-accept lang lahat,” she said.
Pacquiao said he has no plans of quitting soon despite his latest defeat.
Jinkee, however, said she really wants her husband to quit boxing.
“I want to pray that God will speak to Manny on his decision. Yun lang. Ang gusto ko lang na ma-realize niya at marinig niya si God sa sasabihin sa kanya,” she said.
Asked how she would feel if Manny quits boxing, she said: “Relieved.”
She then hugged Pacquiao as she broke down in tears.
