Malacañang’s monster in Maguindanao - Miriam Coronel Ferrer

Sending women to accomplish dangerous missions is a traditional practice in many communities. Sometime in the 1980s, in Sagada, Mt. Province, women were sent out to negotiate the retrieval of dead bodies killed in a shootout between the military and the New People’s Army. The decomposing bodies threatened the sanitation of the river, and there was no time to wait for the fighting to stop. In the 1970s, a group of Kalinga women bared their chests before the engineers of the National Power Corporation and the soldiers of the Philippine military to express their opposition to the Chico River Dam.

Time and again, in Maguindanao and Maranao societies, women would be sent to explore the ground for negotiations that would settle a festering dispute between families.

Why send the women? The logic in doing so exploits the duality of what women are and how they are perceived in most societies. On the one hand, many women possess the inner strength that has helped them cope with life circumstances that are often not under their control but are in the hands of men (fathers, husbands, religious, civic and government authorities). Thus, there will always be brave women willing to take on such dangerous missions when called upon, especially if it would mean saving lives and averting more serious harm.

At the same time, men commonly perceive the women as vulnerable and weak. Women do not traditionally carry the weapons – the men do. They fulfill the non-transferable function of reproducing life, which is necessary for the survival of the race. They are cared for and protected, along with the children. It would be a shame for the men to kill them. And when they bare their chests – a practice done not so much in Islamized communities but in other indigenous communities in the Philippines and countries like Colombia -- it is to humiliate the men for their arrogance.

When Vice-Mayor Esmael Mangudadatu sent his wife, Genalyn and sisters Eden and Farina to accomplish something he cannot do himself because of the death threats against him, he was tapping into this age-old practice of sending women as emissaries. This being the modern time, the purpose was election-related: to file his candidacy for the post of Maguindanao governor. For good measure, he threw in a pack of journalists to cover the event. And to argue their case, two women lawyers were invited to help out. This is, after all, the epoch when the press plays the role of broadcasting events to the greater public, and when journalists, lawyers, candidate, and citizens were protected by laws on press freedom, human rights and elections.

The Mangudadatus thought the formula for non-violent action in an undoubtedly crowded and messy election would be met with restraint. But the act of defiance against their political rival Andal Ampatuan, Jr., was met with the exact opposite.

The ruthlessness in the premeditated plan to obliterate the Mangudadatus from the election scene come May 2010; the crassness with which the convoy was shot at, bodies and vans altogether shoved in newly dug earth; and the utter carelessness as to who gets killed, clan member or not, convoy-rider or passerby, journalist or lawyer, pregnant woman, or whatnot have defied all laws and norms – customary or modern, God-given or human-made, domestic or international, religious or secular.

Yet it has happened, in the here and now, in this blighted country.

I have asked this question a few months ago, in another piece, and I ask them again in pain, how, how did we become a country of killers?

***

While killings have been going on all over the country, there are specific circumstances that made Maguindanao the site of this abominable carnage that to date counts almost 60 people killed in one incident, among them 27 journalists, two lawyers, and more than 20 women.

Maguindanao is the home base of the Ampatuans, the ruling clan in the Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao. Eight years of entrenching themselves in provincial and regional politics have made them the most armed, the most powerfully connected, and probably the richest clan in Moroland. After delivering a 12-0 victory for the administration’s senatorial slate in 2007 and shaving off the popular Fernando Po Jr. votes’ in favor of GMA in the 2004 presidential election, they have earned the eternal affection of the president and her allies.

With government resources, they have armed large numbers of civilians. They have commandeered the loyalty of the provincial and regional police and auxiliary forces to themselves. These forces refused to give security to the Mangudadadatus and were apparently involved in the blockade, making the whole Maguindanao officialdom, and maybe even the regional government, directly involved.

Add to the armory of government-issued firearms the family stockpile of high-powered firearms, easily amassed from the wealth accrued from years in public office. Many of these guns are most likely unregistered (the government’s amnesty for unlicensed firearms that ended October 31 was a total failure; even less arms than were previously accounted for were registered).

A scion of a family enjoying such connections and privileges would find it hard not to be drunk with power and the arrogance of one above the law. Indeed, on the same day as Genalyn was slapped, stabbed and shot and the rest of the convoy hogtied and forced to march to their deaths, the brother of the main suspect was in Malacañang meeting with the president’s party men and forging electoral deals!

Malacañang may be several islands removed from the scene of the crime. But it was no less the occupants of the Palace who pampered the clan with lethal weapons and corrupted power. It was Malacañang who enabled the Ampatuans to build their domain in a volatile terrain viciously contested by competitive clans who feel deprived of their fair share of the spoils.

The people and the rest of the world are watching the national government take decisive action against its most powerful ally. They see through the lame excuses of government spokespersons and the empty, symbolic motions of mourning of a government leadership haunted by the monsters it created.

***

Convicting the mastermind and disbanding the Ampatuan fiefdom is one important step to halt the impunity enjoyed by the ruling clan. But no other clan, even the aggrieved Mangudadatus, should be allowed to entrench themselves in turn. ALL unlicensed firearms should be seized. ALL private armies, the CAFGUS and CVOs under the command of local governments disbanded. An anti-dynasty law should also be passed now to prevent this winner-take-all mentality of political families. Serious consideration by the Congress and COMELEC should be made to hold the election in the ARMM in advance. More on these proposed measures next column.

Take it or Leave it!

The daring and frank message of Australian PM Rudd is one of the best words ever delivered in this world. I am really agree with his statement. This message will really awaken the moron minds, narrow minded and swallow brains.

He is really in fact telling the real message to defend his country, take it or leave it! He is right in every angle and no one should be offended because it is his land, land of aborigins, land of down under people, land of a freedom country called australia, a habitat of where the freedom fighter sheds their bloods, offer their lives to free australia.

I hope that every country should have the same mind, the same idea, this is a true patriotism, a true citizen.

The expats and immigrants should not be offended (at wherever country you are in now), however be a righteous citizen wherever you are! if you feel this is your 2nd home then be a good lawful dwellers!

So shame on the Maguindanao murderers, monsters, and devil minds! you have no place to live in, you have no home and a family, a breedless people. They are inhuman people and have no rights to live in this world. The government should act with urgency no matter what the yesterdays tells you (i.e. you won because of their supports) if you dont act now! shame on you people in Malacanang!

A whole evil kingdom

The sad thing here is that Malacanang has replicated the idea of putting up fiefdoms across the whole country, each one held by a crony warlord or political ally. The Maguindanao setup is the same in almost all provinces, cities or towns, where the law is at the whim of the powerful clans. Even just commuting to work, one can see them bullying their way around with sirens, escorts and bodyguards in tow. The Ampatuans may be at the immoral extreme end of the colony, but the others wield a stranglehold over their territories just the same.

Because by doing so, they control the whole country, and ensure perpetuity in power. It is a deal Malacanang has made, for sure not just in this administration, but from decades of political alliances. Yet the current group of politicians have perfected the system. We Filipinos have a herculean task to dismantle, destroy this evil kingdom. Not only should the Malacanang tenants be removed from office, but every senator, governor, congressman, mayor, etc. who are their partners in crime.

Heaven help us in the coming elections.

ADAPT or LEAVE....

------FROM A FORWARDED EMAIL about Australian Prime Minister KEVIN RUDD------- This should be a world wide rule. If you want to move to any country and become part of that country...WELCOME, But if want to change anything in that new country you wish to live in ..GOODBYE

It took a lot of courage for this man to speak what he had to say for the world to hear. The retribution could be phenomenal, but at least he was willing to take a stand on his and Australia's beliefs. Yes, allow those that want to come, to come. But understand that if you want to go to a country not of your birth, you should expect to live by their rules and respect their ways of life. This doesn't mean you have to give up yours. I think he explains it very well.

Muslims who want to live under Islamic Sharia law were told on Wednesday to get out of Australia , as the government targeted radicals in a bid to head off potential terror attacks.

Separately, Rudd angered some Australian Muslims on Wednesday by saying he supported spy agencies monitoring the nation's mosques. Quote:
'IMMIGRANTS, NOT AUSTRALIANS, MUST ADAPT. Take It Or Leave It. I am tired of this nation worrying about whether we are offending some individual or their culture. Since the terrorist attacks on Bali , we have experienced a surge in patriotism by the majority of Australians.'

'This culture has been developed over two centuries of struggles, trials and victories by millions of men and women who have sought freedom.'

'We speak mainly ENGLISH, not Spanish, Lebanese, Arabic, Chinese, Japanese, Russian, or any other language. Therefore, if you wish to become part of our society, learn the language!'

'Most Australians believe in God. This is not some Christian, right wing, political push, but a fact, because Christian men and women, on Christian principles, founded this nation, and this is clearly documented. It is certainly appropriate to display it on the walls of our schools. If God offends you, then I suggest you consider another part of the world as your new home, because God is part of our culture.'

'We will accept your beliefs, and will not question why. All we ask is that you accept ours, and live in harmony and peaceful enjoyment with us.'

'This is OUR COUNTRY, OUR LAND, and OUR LIFESTYLE, and we will allow you every opportunity to enjoy all this. But once you are done complaining, whining, and griping about Our Flag, Our Pledge, Our Christian beliefs, or Our Way of Life, I highly encourage you take advantage of one other great Australian freedom, 'THE RIGHT TO LEAVE'.'

'If you aren't happy here then LEAVE. We didn't force you to come here. You asked to be here. So accept the country YOU accepted.'

Maybe if we circulate this amongst ourselves, WE will find the courage to start speaking and voicing the same truths.

My take on this-------- Parallel truths about their plight and the Maguindanao Massacre. The Philippines is considered to be Asian country largely populated with Christian people. We do have other citizens under different religions like the Muslims. But for years we have come to live by under the same laws and have tried to co-exist peacefully, however arduous it is. And for the Ampatuans and people like them to put such a heavy strain on our feat to peacefully co-exist amongst our citizens is such a travesty to our present government. Our country cannot move forward with such blatant disregard for life and I do agree with Australian Prime Minister Rudd that if you do not want to live by our rules, our people, our way of life and our struggle to keep order and harmony in our country then, you are free to LEAVE and FIND A PLACE WITH BARBARIC MORALS such as yours...IF you do find one. If you are not happy with the freedom we so fiercefully fought for and would rather live by power and unleash terror sa ating Bayang Magiliw, then for what it's worth ---- LEAVE. But then IF you could find it in your hearts to ADAPT to OUR WAYS, then by all means, live among us and prove to our people you're worth even a pot of soil in our land.

Tiwaling Gobyerno...

We call on military officials to do the same not only to Ampatuan but also to MILF, MNLF, NPA, ABU SAYAF, and to all private armies ng mga politiko sa Mindanao.

4G's

I thought there are only 3 G's in politics here in the Philippines but I was wrong as long as Gloria is in Malacanang.

G - Guns
G - Gold
G - Glory
G - Gloria

MAGUINDANAO KILLING FIELD

5

The CORRUPT regime of GLORIA ARROYO is beholden to the AMPATUAN clan who delivered the illegal votes to her in 2004 and 2007 elections.

There will be NO impartial investigation of the neardenthal massacre unless a outside/independent prosecutor(s) coupled with outside investigators like the US Federal Bureau of Investigation or Britain's MI5 doing the thorough investigation.

God please save the Philippines from this devil GLORIA ARROYO AND HER CORRUPT CABALS.

touched

I am deeply touched of the your words below. Why really under this government of Gloria we become killers.....is it because of grid, money, power! many people become poor the past 8 years...

"I have asked this question a few months ago, in another piece, and I ask them again in pain, how, how did we become a country of killers?"

Let us pray for everyone, we pray that the people will open their minds and help each other build a better nation.

questions???

While I believe everything you say regarding the massacre, I just noticed you mentioned .." Add to the armory of government-issued firearms the family stockpile of high-powered firearms,"..but the pictures we are seeing regarding the surrendered arms seems to be different. What I see in the pictures are old, garand-type firearms that are mainly used by ROTC cadets for first-time firing exercises.
Can you please help in getting some answers regarding this so that we will at least be convinced that the military is really doing something. We are not a country of illiterates so the military should show us "genuine" actions and solutions.

True

I would believe that...
