Mexico flu deaths rise to 95
MEXICO CITY - Mexico's swine flu death toll rose by six to 95 on Thursday, while the number of infected cases rose to 4,879, the health ministry said in a statement.
The latest deaths from A(H1N1) were not recent or due to new infections, the ministry said as it stressed that the virus was on the wane in Mexico, where the world's first swine flu outbreaks were reported last month.
The World Health Organisation (WHO) on Thursday released details of swine flu samples sent to drug companies this week for use in making a vaccine against the new strain of influenza.
However, experts are still mulling whether to give the go ahead for production as this may reduce or halt the manufacture of vaccines for seasonal flu.
The WHO said 13,398 people in 48 countries had been infected with the A(H1N1) virus since it was first uncovered last month, including 95 deaths, in its most recent report on Wednesday.
Since that tally at least 11 more swine flu-related fatalities including Mexico's latest have been confirmed by health officials, and three more countries -- Dominican Republic, Slovakia and Uruguay -- have reported their first cases of the virus.
