LOS ANGELES - Michael Jackson's body will be taken to Los Angeles Staples Center later Tuesday for the star's memorial service following a private family ceremony, police said.

Los Angeles Police Department chief William Bratton confirmed Jackson's body would be taken to the sports arena after family members paid tribute to the star at an 8:00am (1500 GMT) service in Hollywood.

"My understanding is that Mr Jackson's remains will be moved to the Staples Center but we're not giving any details at this juncture," Bratton told KNX 1070 local radio.

No further information was available and it was not clear where Jackson's body would be taken after the ceremony.

The TMZ.com celebrity website meanwhile reported that a "heavy motorcade" escorted by the LAPD's SWAT team would transport Jackson's body from the Forest Lawn cemetery to the Staples Center.

The website reported that Jackson's body could be taken to the memorial by helicopter if safety issues arose.
