MUMBAI - Indian police are in the process of clearing one of two luxury hotels in Mumbai that was attacked by Islamist militants and have not encountered a "hostage-like situation," the state's police chief said Thursday.

Police commissioner A.N. Roy said police and army commandos were moving through the five-star Taj Mahal hotel "room by room."

"Some dead bodies were lying inside, they have been brought out. This process is on," he told the NDTV new channel.

"There are guests in the rooms, but we won't be able to give you a number. There is no hostage-like situation in the Taj," he said.

But he added that there was "some probability of people being held hostage" in the Oberoi-Trident hotel, which was also attacked late Wednesday by Islamist gunmen, and in Nariman House -- a business and residential complex.
